George Iliopoulos has studied Chemical Engineering in National Technical University of Athens

He is Consultant Engineer with extensive experience 20 yrs, in International and National
SWM Projects and Energy Efficiency and he holds accreditation in Chemical Engineering and
Energy Studies.
Today he is the CEO of EPTA SA Engineering and Consulting Firm www.epta.gr .
At the past, he has been General Manager of the Greek subsidiary of a multinational
Company, President of the Hellenic Association of Chem. Engineers and the Vice President of
the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Michalis Geranis was born in 1965 in Asvestochori. He was actively involved with the local government in 1998 when he was elected first in votes as Municipal Councilor of the former Municipality of Chortiatis and in 1999 he was elected President of the Municipal Council. In the municipal elections of 2002 he was elected Mayor of the Kapodistrian Municipality of Chortiatis, renewing his term in the next municipal elections of 2006.

In the municipal elections of 2010 he was elected first in votes Municipal Councilor, as also was the case in the municipal elections of 2014. Both in the first term from January 2011 and in the second since September 2014 he was elected President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Pylea – Chortiatis.

In February 2013 he was elected President of the Association of Local Government Organizations of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki and in April 2013 he was elected the first President of the New Regional Association of Solid Waste Management Bodies (FODSA) of Central Macedonia. He was also elected in the same position in December 2014.

Nicolas Moussiopoulos is since 1989 a Full Professor and Laboratory Head at the School of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University Thessaloniki (AUTh). He is also a Honorary Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. In the period 1982-1989 he taught at the Universities of Kassel and Karlsruhe. He conducts research work in the broad field of energy and the environment, participating in numerous competitive projects with a total budget exceeding 20 million €. He supervised 42 PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers in six countries. He is the author of more than 220 papers in peer-reviewed journals (Google Scholar: ~ 9500 citations, h-index: 50).

Professor Moussiopoulos held various top-level positions in University administration (three terms School Chairman, 2006-2010 Dean of AUTh’s Faculty of Engineering and 2010-2016 Vice President of the International Hellenic University). He served as a Scientific Council member of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (2018-2021). Among other prizes, Professor Moussiopoulos received the Heinrich Hertz Award and was honored with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 2002, he is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Secretary General

He is Senior Researcher, with PhD in waste management. He works as Laboratory-Teaching Staff in the Unit of Environmental Science & Technology (www.uest.gr) of the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. He has actively participated in more than 65 projects in many countries. He has long teaching experience and considerable international experience as senior researcher and project manager. He has cooperated with the European Commission directly, as he acted as TAIEX expert (institutional building) in many countries. He has long training activity in the field of environment in different countries and has been working for the Hellenic Open University as Collaborating Teaching Staff in the field of solid waste for eight years. He has already published a high number of articles in journals and conferences, he has served as Guest Editor in several Special Issues, while he has had the key role in the organisation of a large number of international conferences. Indicatively, he is the Head of the Organising Committee and key member of the Scientific Committee for the successful series of conferences on Sustainable Solid Waste Management.

Elena Barogianni is a graduate of the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a Master of Laws in the field of Environmental Law of the same school. She is a qualified lawyer, member of the Athens Bar Association, since 2017, specializing in Environmental, Waste Management, Public Procurement and Energy Law. She has been a legal advisor to the General Secretary for Investments and PPPs but also an advisor to the Hellenic Ministries of Development and Investments, Environment and Energy and Finance and to public companies in the field of Energy (HHRM SA, DEPA International Works SA).

Rozy Charitopoulou has studied Chemistry in Germany at the Albert-Ludwigs Universitaet of Freiburg (specialization in Biochemistry) and obtained her doctorate in the field of Environmental Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. She returned to Greece in 1997.

Since then, she has been involved in issues related to environmental management and solid waste management, through the practice of a freelance profession as well as via Universities (visiting professor at the University of the Aegean and the Technical University of Crete, consulting to Municipalities, Ministries and other Organizations). Since 2002, she has been an executive of the M.O.U. S.A. (Development Program Management Organization Unit) of the Ministry of Development with the purpose of managing community development programs at the Ministry of Rural Development.

Since 2012, she has served at the Hellenic Recycling Agency, body supervised by the Ministry of Environment and is responsible for the development and implementation of the recycling strategy in Greece. (From 2013 to 2020 she held the position of Director of Alternative Management, while she served as General Director from 2015 – 2018).  
Since July 2020 until now, she served as Special Advisor to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment on Circular Economy issues. From January 2022 until the end of 2023, she served as Secretary General of the Municipality of Kifissia, supervising the 9 Directorates of the Municipality and the Municipality’s funded programs. Since the beginning of 2024, she has returned to Hellenic Recycling Agency.

She has been a member of the Committee for “Green Transport” of the Ministry of Transport, a member of EU expert committees on environmental and waste management issues, a member of the Committees for “Green Public Procurement” and  “Environment – ​​Sustainable Development – ​​Circular Economy”. From September 2014 to 2019, she was an elected Municipal Councilor in the Municipality of Kifissia, Commissioner for Environmental Issues, President of the Environmental Committee and Vice President of the Public Legal Entity “Floricultural Fair of Kifissia”.

Constantinos Psomopoulos holds a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from NTUA and a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from NTUA. Since 2018 he is a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of University of West Attica, Director of the Research Laboratory of High Voltages and Energy Systems. From 2007 to 2018 he was a Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the former TEI of Piraeus, where he also served as Assoc. President of the Department. He is Vice President of the Hellenic Waste to Energy Council (WTERT Greece), a member of the Global WTERT Council and a Researcher at the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University of New York. As an engineer he has worked in the period 1998-2010 in various energy and waste management projects in Greece, the Balkans, Cyprus and the MENA countries. Since 2007 he has been a member of the EU Scientific Committees in the field of eco-design of energy using/ related products and has participated in the publication of numerous studies on the adoption of EU EcoDesign regulations. His published research work in international scientific journals and international conferences exceed 200 articles and participates in the editorial boards of many international journals in the fields of energy and environment.

Mr. Spiros Kouloumoundras, a Mechanical Engineer of the University of Patras with a postgraduate (M.Sc.) degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in Great Britain, currently holds the position of Project Manager for PPP Waste Treatment Projects of TERNA ENERGY S.A.

He possesses more than 20 years of experience in environmental projects, both from different positions of responsibility (Development Manager, Operations Manager, Project Manager, etc.) as well as in diversified technologies (municipal waste recycling units, landfill biogas plants, electricity generation from renewable sources, incineration of medical waste, etc.), while at the same time he is experienced in the whole range of project development (design, licensing, financing, construction and operation).

He has been a member of the Board of the Hellenic Association of Renewable Energy  Producers from Renewable Energy Sources (ESIAPE), while he has previously been a member of the Editorial Committee of the Hellenic Association of Mechanical – Electrical Engineers for 20 years.

It is the first time that he is elected as a member of the Board of EEDSA.

He is the Project Development Manager of THALIS ES –  MOTOR OIL group since October 2023.

He is an experienced business executive with significant results after 30 years of work in the field of Industry and Refining facilities as well as in the field of basic operational structures of the Electricity market, holding important positions in the companies of the MOTOR OIL group.

He is a graduate in Electrical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, holds an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

He has over time achieved significant results in the development and operation of key business activities, with strong know-how and industrial experience as a basic asset, contributing to the formation of the development strategy and the implementation of the required operational changes.

Athanasios Savvakis is:

He is the Managing Director of the Regional Association of Waste Management Companies of South Aegean, Dr. of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering.

As an expert in environmental management and sustainability, Dr. Christos Gamvroudis is currently serving as the Managing Director of FODSA S.A. Holding a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and two M.Sc. degrees in relevant fields, Dr. Gamvroudis possesses extensive knowledge in national, regional and international environmental laws, circular economy, and climate change adaptation relevant aspects. Dr. Gamvroudis’ management experience molded in high-pressure environments and accompanied with prominent scientific expertise, constitute the fundamental basis of his contributory ability to conceive, develop and implement efficient and sustainable waste management strategies in both micro and macro level. Dr. Gamvroudis’ professional employment history includes significant roles as a senior environmental consultant and advisor to municipality projects, thus reflecting his adeptness throughout his career path.

Marios Skarvelakis is an Environmental Engineer (MSc- Int.Master), a graduate of the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras. Since 2007, he has been active in the fields of terrestrial and marine environmental protection, through companies providing consulting services and solid waste management services.

He has many years of experience in recycling and waste management projects (hazardous and non-hazardous), as well as in the supervision of environmental management and decontamination projects, while participating in research programs, with an emphasis on innovation and the circular economy. Today, he represents the company KYKLOS S.A., having the role of General Manager, with activity in the Alternative Management of Plant Protection Product Packaging, within the framework of the obligations of Extended Producer Responsibility.

 

Panagiotis Papadeas is a Chemical Engineer (National Technical University of Athens) and holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Athens University of Economics and Business. He currently holds the position of the Environmental and Quality Director, Greece of TITAN Cement Co. S.A.

He has 21 years of experience in the industry, 16 of which in various positions in the fields of production, environment, and quality both at the plants and at the headquarters of TITAN Cement Co. He represents the Greek cement industry in working groups of the European Cement Association (CEMBUREAU) since 2016.  

Constantinos Ploumitsakos has an extensive scientific and professional experience, both in Greece and abroad. A chemical engineer, a graduate of the National Technical University of Athens, he has worked as a manager in the fields of solar water production systems, as well as in the management and utilization of hazardous waste.

HSWMA Scientific & Techical Council

He graduated from the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens in 1976 and obtained his Ph.D in 1983. He became Teaching Assistant in 1979 and then promoted to Lecturer (1985), Assistant Professor (1988), Associate Professor (1992) and Professor (1996) at the same School.
He has been Vice-Rector and Rector of the University, as well as Visiting Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA where he became adjunct Professor in 1994. Treasurer and Secretary General of the Hellenic Polymer Society, Chairman of the Greek Association of Chemical Engineers, Vice-Chairman of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering, member of the General Assembly of the Technical Chamber of Greece and Chairman of the ETAT S.A.. Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change (2010-2011). He has been Chairman of the Board of HSWMA (2012-17) and currently he is the President of the Hellenic Polytechnic Association.
His research activities are focused on the topics of materials processing and more specifically, on the recycling and solid waste management, including both urban and industrial waste. He has published more than 200 publications including books, monographs, papers in international scientific journals and conference presentations and lectures.

Anastasia Arfanakou is a Chemical Engineer (NTUA) and has been working for over 25 years in the field of waste management at the Ministry of Environment and Energy. She is the head of the Waste Management Department, while from 2015 to 2020 she was an ordinary member of the Management Board the Hellenic Recycling Αgency (EOAN). Αmong other things, she has been involved in the drafting of waste management legislation in the framework of incorporation of the four directives for waste of the circular economy package of measures.

From 2015 til today, she teaches the course of Solid Waste Management and Waste Recycling at the University of West Attica, in the Postgraduate Program “Applied Environmental Protection Policies and Techniques”.

Katia Lazaridi is a Professor and President of the Department of Geography at Harokopio University, where she teaches environmental management. She has studied physics at the University of Athens and received M.Sc. in the Environmental Pollution Control and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, from the University of Leeds (UK). She has been the President of the Hellenic Recycling Agency.

She is involved in the field of environmental management and technology with emphasis on solid waste management, olive waste treatment, industrial ecology, environmental safety and environmental decision support systems (EDSS).

Vassilis Liogas is a B.Sc. Mechanical Engineer (AUTh), holder of a postgraduate degree in Spatial Planning, Urban Planning & Regional Development and also holder of a postgraduate degree in Environmental Engineering & Science, in the field of waste management and water resources.

He is currently a Member of the ENV.E.2 Sector of the EU Directorate-General for the Environment and a PhD candidate in NTUA in the subject of Circular Economy.

Until 2020 he has worked as: Special collaborator-advisor to the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, on issues of environmental policy and environmental projects, especially on waste management and circular economy. Special collaborator-consultant of the Secretary General Secretary General of Natural Environment & Water, in matters of circular economy such as the legislation on Disposable Plastics. He was essentially involved in the new institutional framework for waste management and its implementation. Coordinator of an inter-ministerial Project Management Team for the planning, elaboration and implementation of the National Strategy and the Business Action Plan for Circular Economy.Representative at an international Partnership of the Urban Agenda for Circular Economy and at many Technical Committees of experts. Executive of the Management Organization Unit of Development Programs (MOU SA) of the Ministry of Economy and Development. Member of the Board of the Hellenic Recycling Agency. Μember of the Municipal Council of Kavala (from 2002 to 2014).

Maria Loizidou is an Emeritus Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens.

She is involved in the field of Solid and Liquid Waste Management for more than 40 years. She has successfully implemented more than 200 research projects as a scientific coordinator. She has more than 700 publications in international scientific journals and international conferences. She has organized numerous international scientific conferences of environmental theme and is the publisher of international scientific journals.

She has been a member of the Governing Committee of the Cyprus University of Technology (2003 – 2012), Dean of the Polytechnic School, as well as President of the Environmental Department, which she formed from zero basis. She has, for many years, been a member of the Thematic Center for Waste and Material Flow of the European Environment Agency based in Copenhagen. She was the scientific director of the European LIFE SOL-BRINE program entitled: ‘Development of an innovative desalination brine treatment system using renewable energy sources’, which was selected as the best (1st Green Award) in the environmental module by the LIFE projects prepared on 25 years 1992 – 2017.

Michalis Geranis was born in 1965 in Asvestochori. Prof. Konstantinos Aravosis is Vice President and Waste Management BoD Chairman at Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water – RAAEY
He is Professor and UNESCO Chairholder on Green Innovation and Circular Economy at the NTUA (National Technical University of Athens) and Professor at the ATHENS MBA (NTUA – Athens University of Economics) since 1997. He is the coordinator of the “Environmental Economics and Sustainable Development Research Group” of the Sector of Industrial Management and Operations Research of the Mechanical Engineering School.
He was also a visiting professor at Imperial College – University of London and a research associate at the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University – USA.
He was Secretary General for Forestry, from 2/2022 to 7/2023, at the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy. Prior to that, he was also Secretary General of Natural Environment & Water.
He is a Mechanical Engineer (Aachen University of Technology – Germany) with an MSc in Management Science from Imperial College and a Phd from NTUA.
He was an advisor to the Minister of Culture, on the Olympic Games projects, and their post-Olympic use.
He has been President of the Greek Association of Environmental Protection Companies (PASEPE), President of the Hellenic Solid Waste Management Association (HSWMA) (now Hon. President), President of the Ordinary Environmental Committee of the Technical Chamber of Greece, President of the Greek Branch of the Waste to Energy Research and Technology Council, coordinated by Columbia University and Member of Evaluation Committees for Investment and Energy Projects of the Ministry of Development. Furthermore, he has been Member of the Board of the Organization of Labour Residencies (OEK) and General Manager of Environmental Companies.
He has extensive research experience (as a coordinator or project team member of European Programmes) in investment management and evaluation, operational research and environmental investment analysis.
He was co-founder and main organizer of the largest national volunteer campaign (45.000 volunteers) LETS DO IT GREECE where the whole country is cleaned in one day with symbolic character in the framework of the international campaign LETS DO IT WORLD.

He has organized 14 International Conferences and has authored books and more than 100 publications in international scientific journals and proceedings of International Conferences while coordinating many national and international research projects.
